Nyírásfügg

Nyírásfügg is a Hungarian term that translates literally to "shear dependency." It is a concept primarily found in the context of sheep farming and wool production. The term describes a situation where a sheep's health, well-being, or even survival becomes significantly reliant on being shorn. This reliance is not inherent but rather a consequence of prolonged wool growth that can lead to overheating, increased susceptibility to parasites, and difficulty moving or foraging effectively.

In extreme cases, a sheep that has not been shorn for a long period may develop a thick, matted fleece. This dense coat traps heat and moisture, creating an environment conducive to skin infections and attracting flies that can lay eggs, leading to flystrike. The weight of the wool can also become a burden, impairing the animal's mobility and making it harder to find food or escape predators. Therefore, when such a sheep is finally shorn, the relief it experiences can appear dramatic, hence the term "nyírásfügg."
