Nyppyihin

Nyppyihin is a Finnish term that translates to "pimples" or "breakouts" in English. It refers to the small, often inflamed bumps that appear on the skin, most commonly on the face, neck, chest, and back. These blemishes are a very common skin condition, particularly during adolescence due to hormonal changes, but they can affect individuals of all ages.

The development of nyppyihin is primarily linked to the pilosebaceous units, which are hair follicles and their associated sebaceous glands. When these glands produce excess sebum (oil), and dead skin cells clog the pores, bacteria such as Propionibacterium acnes can proliferate. This leads to inflammation, redness, and the formation of various types of lesions, including blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts.

While the exact cause can vary, contributing factors beyond hormones and bacteria include genetics, certain medications, stress, and potentially diet for some individuals. Management of nyppyihin often involves over-the-counter topical treatments containing ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. More persistent or severe cases may require prescription medications, including topical or oral antibiotics, retinoids, or hormonal therapies, often under the guidance of a dermatologist.
