Nyálkahártyatermelés refers to the process by which mucous membranes produce mucus. Mucous membranes are specialized tissues that line various cavities and organs of the body, including the respiratory tract, digestive system, urinary tract, and reproductive organs. The primary function of mucus is lubrication and protection. It forms a viscous layer that keeps the underlying tissues moist, preventing them from drying out and becoming damaged. This lubricating property is crucial for the smooth passage of substances, such as food through the digestive tract or air through the airways.

Furthermore, mucus acts as a barrier against pathogens like bacteria and viruses, trapping them and preventing them from entering the body's tissues. It also contains immune components, such as antibodies and enzymes, that help to neutralize or eliminate these invaders. In the respiratory system, the mucus, along with cilia (tiny hair-like structures), helps to sweep inhaled particles, dust, and debris out of the lungs. In the digestive system, mucus protects the stomach lining from the corrosive effects of stomach acid. The rate and composition of mucus production can vary depending on factors such as physiological state, environmental conditions, and the presence of irritants or infections. Conditions affecting mucous membranes can lead to either excessive mucus production (hypersecretion) or insufficient mucus production (hyposecretion), both of which can have detrimental effects on bodily functions.
