Nusselttall

Nusselttall is a mountain valley in the Nordwald region of the fictional country of Altora. It lies along the Nussel River, which originates in the western high moors and flows southeast to the foothills. The valley is defined by steep limestone walls, mixed conifer forests, and a climate typical of temperate alpine valleys. Settlements cluster along the river and are linked by a single main road and a regional rail line.

The valley runs roughly 35 kilometers from north to south, with narrow upper gorges and broader plains downstream. The Nussel supports small trout populations, and springs contribute to a cool, stable watershed. Surrounding slopes are used for forestry, pasture, and scattered orchards.

Archaeological finds indicate Bronze Age occupation, followed by medieval farming communities and a fortress that guarded a historic trade route. In the modern era, timber harvesting and agriculture shaped settlement patterns, while conservation and tourism have grown since the late 20th century.

Today, forestry, dairy farming, and tourism drive the local economy. The area attracts hikers and climbers in summer and skiers in winter, with a small network of marked trails and guest houses. Transportation relies on the main road, the regional rail line, and shuttle services to trailheads.

The population is dispersed across several villages, with a combined resident count in the low thousands. Local culture includes seasonal harvest celebrations and craft traditions such as wood carving and basketry. Institutions include a primary school and a parish church.

Notable sites include the Nusselttall Gorge, the Old Nusselttall Bridge, and the hilltop ruins of Hohenfels Castle. The valley's protected forests and river corridor are important for ecology and conservation.
