Nullpeaaegu

Nullpeaaegu is a small coastal municipality located on the northern coast of Estonia, within Harju County. The town lies on a narrow peninsula that projects into the Baltic Sea, and its population was recorded as 1,223 residents in the 2021 census. The settlement is accessible via a series of coastal roads that connect it to the larger city of Tallinn, approximately 35 kilometers to the southeast.

The geography of Nullpeaaegu is characterized by gentle dune systems, interspersed with pine forests and salt marshes that support a diverse array of bird species. Its climate is temperate maritime, with mild summers and cool, damp winters. The sea influences local weather patterns, producing frequent fog in the spring and autumn months.

Nullpeaaegu dates back to the 15th century, when it was established as a small fishing outpost known for its cod and herring catches. The town’s history includes periods of Swedish rule and later incorporation into the Russian Empire. In the 1930s, a lighthouse was constructed on the westernmost point of the peninsula, which remains a key navigational aid for vessels entering the northern harbor of Tallinn.

Today, the local economy is dominated by commercial fishing, particularly of herring and salmon, as well as agrotourism. The annual Nullpeaaegu Midsummer Festival celebrates traditional Estonian music, rowing competitions, and local culinary specialties featuring freshly caught fish. Preservation of the surrounding dunes and wetlands is managed by a regional nature reserve, making the area a popular destination for bird watchers and hikers.
