Nullmittelwert

Nullmittelwert, also known as the zero mean or expected value of zero, is a concept primarily encountered in statistics and signal processing. It describes a signal or a random variable whose average value over a long period or over all possible outcomes is zero. This does not mean that the signal or variable is always zero at any given moment, but rather that positive and negative fluctuations tend to cancel each other out.

In statistics, a random variable with a nullmittelwert has an expected value of zero. This is often a desirable property, as it simplifies many mathematical analyses. For instance, in the context of noise, a nullmittelwert noise component means that the noise does not introduce a systematic bias in either direction.

In signal processing, a signal with a nullmittelwert is one that oscillates around zero. Many naturally occurring signals, such as alternating current (AC) signals or random noise, exhibit this characteristic. Techniques like signal averaging are often used to extract signals from noisy backgrounds, and these methods often rely on the assumption that the noise has a nullmittelwert.
