Notendaskrá

Notendaskrá is the official student record used by Icelandic educational institutions to document a student's educational history. It typically includes personal data, enrollment in programs, courses taken, grades or marks, earned credits, and any degrees or certificates awarded. It may also record enrollment status, leaves of absence, transfers, and communication between the student and the institution.

Notendaskrá serves several purposes: it provides the basis for evaluating academic progress and conferral of degrees; it is used to issue official transcripts and certificates; and it can be consulted in admissions, transfers, or employment verification. In higher education it is often integrated with national or institution-level student information systems to streamline registration, scheduling, and reporting.

Access to the record is restricted to authorized staff and, in most cases, the student themselves has the right to view and obtain copies of their records. Data protection rules require safeguarding personal information, with retention periods defined by law or institutional policy. Students may request corrections if information is inaccurate.

The concept and its management are overseen by educational authorities and individual institutions, with digitization increasing accuracy and accessibility. Notendaskrá thus functions as the formal archive of a student’s academic history within the Icelandic education system.
