Norcia

Norcia is a comune in the province of Perugia, in the Umbria region of central Italy. It lies in the Valnerina valley along the Nera River, at the foot of the Monti Sibillini. The name derives from the ancient Latin form Nursia.

Historically, Norcia is associated with Saint Benedict of Nursia, traditionally believed to have been born there in the 5th century, and it remains a site of Benedictine heritage. The town is renowned for its culinary tradition, especially cured pork products such as prosciutto and various salumi, which are produced by local artisans and sold throughout the area.

The historic center features medieval stone buildings and religious architecture, with the Basilica of Saint Benedict serving as a notable landmark. The local economy centers on agriculture and livestock, food processing, and tourism, with a focus on regional culinary specialties and seasonal markets.

In October 2016, a major earthquake struck central Italy, causing extensive damage to Norcia’s historic core and infrastructure, including the Basilica of Saint Benedict. Reconstruction and stabilization efforts have continued since, with partial reopening of some churches and public spaces as work progresses.

Geographically, Norcia is near the Monti Sibillini National Park, offering hiking and outdoor recreation in addition to its culinary attractions. The town continues to balance preservation of its historic heritage with rebuilding and economic recovery.
