Nonwoven fasermaterialien, also known as nonwovens or nonwoven fabrics, are sheet or web structures bonded together by entangling fiber or filaments (and by perforating films) mechanically, thermally, or chemically. They are not manufactured by weaving or knitting and do not require conversion of the fibers to yarn. The fibers used can be natural or synthetic, such as polyester, polypropylene, rayon, or cotton.

The production process for nonwovens is diverse, allowing for a wide range of properties and applications. Common methods include spunbonding, meltblowing, carding, and needle punching. Spunbonding involves extruding thermoplastic polymers into continuous filaments which are then laid down in a random web. Meltblowing produces fine fibers by extruding molten polymer through a die into a high-velocity air stream. Carding aligns fibers into a web using rotating cylinders with hooks, while needle punching entangles the fibers using barbed needles.

The versatility of nonwoven fasermaterialien leads to their use in a multitude of industries. In hygiene products, they are found in diapers, sanitary napkins, and wipes due to their absorbency and softness. They are also crucial in medical applications, such as surgical gowns, masks, and wound dressings, offering barrier protection and disposability. The construction industry utilizes nonwovens as geotextiles for soil stabilization and drainage, while the automotive sector employs them for insulation and interior components. Other applications include filtration, agriculture, and home furnishings. The specific properties, such as strength, absorbency, breathability, and filtration efficiency, can be tailored by selecting different fibers, manufacturing processes, and post-treatments.
