Nonstandardization refers to the absence, rejection, or limited adoption of standardized conventions within a domain. The term describes a spectrum, from informal practices that operate without formal standards to intentional avoidance of universal rules to preserve flexibility or competition.

In linguistics, nonstandardization is the persistence or legitimization of nonstandard language varieties, such as regional dialects and sociolects. These forms often reflect identity, social meaning, and practical needs. While standard varieties dominate official domains like education and law, nonstandard varieties continue to be used in everyday life, media, and community contexts. Critics warn that lack of standardization can hinder assessment or communication across groups, while supporters argue that it fosters inclusivity and resilience.

In technology and data, nonstandardization can describe heterogeneous formats, interfaces, or protocols that have not been governed by a single consensus. It can spur adaptation and innovation but creates interoperability challenges, higher integration costs, and fragmentation.
