Nonsacrality

Nonsacrality is a term used in anthropology, religious studies, and cultural theory to denote the absence of sacred status or the deliberate rejection of sacral attribution to objects, places, practices, or discourses. It refers to conditions under which something is regarded as profane, secular, or mundane and not readily eligible for ritual consideration or divine significance. The concept is often discussed in relation to sacrality, which denotes qualities of holiness, ritual value, or numinous power.

In practice, nonsacrality can manifest in the secularization of public spaces, the desacralization of artifacts, or the institutional framing of religion as one cultural system among others. It can be intentional, as in modernist architecture or museum curation that treats sacred objects as cultural heritage, or emergent through social processes that reframe previously sacred sites as historical or tourist sites. The term also applies to discourses that explicitly reject sacral explanations or insist on empirical, non-transcendent interpretations.

Theoretically, nonsacrality engages with debates about secularization, desacralization, and immanence. Some scholars view sacrality as historically contingent and argue that modern life can reconfigure sacred meanings, while others warn against assuming universal categories of sacred versus profane. Methodologically, studies may draw on ethnography, discourse analysis, or material culture to examine how communities negotiate sacral boundaries.

Nonsacrality helps analyze how societies manage sacred meanings in pluralistic environments, how museums or media frame religious objects, and how new technologies or global flows reshape notions of holiness. Key questions include how and why sacral status is attributed, contested, or withdrawn, and what consequences these processes have for identity, power, and memory.
