Nonmemoryless

Nonmemoryless describes distributions or processes that do not satisfy the memoryless property. In probability theory, a random variable X is memoryless if for all nonnegative s and t, P(X > s + t | X > s) = P(X > t). Equivalently, the distribution of the remaining time until an event is independent of how long the event has already lasted. The continuous memoryless distributions are essentially exponential; in discrete time, the geometric distribution plays the analogous role. Most common distributions, such as normal, gamma with shape parameter not equal to 1, Weibull with shape not equal to 1, lognormal, or uniform, are nonmemoryless.

In stochastic processes, the memoryless property often concerns interarrival or waiting times. A process with exponential holding times is memoryless and frequently modeled as a continuous-time Markov process. When interarrival or service times are not exponential, the process loses the memoryless property and is often described as a renewal process with non-exponential interarrival times. Markovian behavior can still arise in more complex models if the state space is extended (for example, by including age or residual life), but the simplest formulations rely on memoryless components to guarantee the Markov property.

Applications and implications vary by field. In reliability engineering, nonmemoryless failure times indicate aging effects (increasing or decreasing hazard rates). In queueing theory, nonmemoryless service or interarrival times lead to different performance characteristics compared to memoryless models. The term nonmemoryless is a descriptive label for distributions or processes that fail the memoryless criterion, rather than a formal class with a single defining property.
