Nonfragrance refers to products that are formulated without added scents, including both artificial fragrances and natural essential oils. The term is often used in the context of sensitive skin, allergies, or chemical sensitivities, where exposure to fragrances can cause irritation, allergic reactions, or other adverse effects. Unlike "fragrance-free" products, which may still contain masking agents to cover natural odors, nonfragrance products are completely devoid of intentional scent additives.

The demand for nonfragrance products has grown among individuals with conditions such as multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), migraines, or asthma, as well as those who simply prefer to avoid potential irritants. These products are commonly found in skincare, cosmetics, household cleaners, and personal care items. Manufacturers often label products as "nonfragrance" or "unscented" to indicate their absence of added fragrances, though "unscented" can sometimes be misleading if masking agents are present.

Certifications and standards, such as those from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) or the National Eczema Association, can help consumers identify truly nonfragrance products. However, it is important to note that even products labeled as nonfragrance may contain trace amounts of scent compounds from raw materials or manufacturing processes. Individuals with severe sensitivities may still experience reactions, and patch testing is often recommended before use.

Nonfragrance products are not inherently safer than scented alternatives but are designed to minimize exposure to potential irritants. They are particularly valued in sensitive populations and contribute to a broader trend toward cleaner, more transparent labeling in consumer goods.
