Nonenabling

Nonenabling refers to a set of behaviors and attitudes that aim to prevent the continuation or exacerbation of another person's harmful or self-destructive patterns. It is often discussed in the context of addiction, codependency, and other problematic behaviors. The core principle of nonenabling is to withdraw support that might inadvertently facilitate or prolong the negative behavior, while still maintaining care for the individual.

Instead of shielding someone from the natural consequences of their actions, nonenabling involves allowing those consequences to occur. Nonenabling is distinct from enabling, which is characterized by actions that shield individuals from the consequences of their behavior, thereby making it easier for them to continue the problematic pattern. While enabling can stem from love or a desire to help, it ultimately hinders personal growth and recovery. Nonenabling, on the other hand, is a more assertive approach that prioritizes the long-term well-being and autonomy of the individual. It often requires setting firm boundaries and practicing self-care for the person doing the nonenabling.
