Noncredit offerings include continuing education courses, professional development workshops, noncredit certificates, language courses, and hobby or enrichment classes. Some programs award continuing education units (CEUs) or professional development units (PDUs) for licensure or certification maintenance, but these units are not typically counted as college credits.

Institutions distinguish noncredit from credit-bearing work by the absence of degree credit on a transcript and often different transfer and financing arrangements. Credit courses carry grades, credit hours, and potential transfer toward degree requirements; noncredit courses usually have open enrollment, lower formal assessment, and do not count toward degree progression unless the institution later accepts them as transfer credits.

Noncredit programs may be funded by participants, employers, or state continuing education funds, and may be ineligible for federal financial aid that supports degree-seeking study.
