Nodescities is a conceptual framework for distributed urban computing in which computing and storage resources are physically dispersed across a city to form an integrated edge fabric. The aim is to reduce latency, improve resilience, and enhance data locality by locating micro data centers, edge servers, and storage closer to end users and sensors within municipal and commercial facilities.

A nodescity typically comprises multiple nodes organized into zones, a centralized management plane, and governance mechanisms that coordinate resource sharing among public agencies, utilities, and private operators. Networks connect nodes through high-capacity links, often leveraging software-defined networking and open interoperability standards to support dynamic placement and workload migration.

Architecturally, nodescities mix edge, fog, and core computing layers. Compute and storage resources are orchestrated by a common platform that supports containerized workloads, data routing with locality rules, and secure data exchange. Local data processing enables real-time analytics while preserving privacy by limiting data movement outside the zone.

Interest in nodescities has grown in smart-city research and municipal pilots, where the approach complements centralized cloud services. Potential applications include traffic management, public safety sensor fusion, environmental monitoring, disaster response, and bandwidth-efficient content delivery for urban populations.
