NoObservedEffect

NoObservedEffect is a term used in experimental research to indicate that, under a defined set of conditions (for example a specific dose, exposure duration, and chosen endpoints), no measurable effect was observed in the test group relative to a control group. It is descriptive rather than a formal regulatory metric and is commonly reported in toxicology, pharmacology, and environmental studies as part of dose–response or time-course analyses. NoObservedEffect signals that within the sensitivity of the study methods, the exposure did not produce detectable changes.

Determination depends on endpoint selection, analytical sensitivity, sample size, and statistical criteria. It does not guarantee safety, since effects could appear at untested endpoints, at longer durations, or below detection limits. It also does not specify a safe exposure level by itself; it simply marks a region where no effects were detected in the tested endpoints.

In reporting, authors specify the endpoints tested, exposure levels, timing, and the statistics used to assess differences. NoObservedEffect may be described alongside observed effects at higher doses or longer exposures to illustrate the study’s dose-response pattern.
