Lowest

Lowest is the superlative form of low, describing the smallest height, depth, level, amount, or degree within a defined set or scale. Because it is relative, its precise meaning depends on the context or comparator used.

In mathematics and physics, "lowest" often describes minima. A function’s lowest value is its minimum; a global minimum is the smallest value over the entire domain, while a local minimum is the smallest value in a neighborhood. The term is also used for energy states: the lowest energy state is the ground state.

In geography and earth science, "lowest" can describe the smallest elevation in a region. On land, the lowest elevations are near or below sea level (for example, areas around the Dead Sea). In contrast, ocean depths are described by how far below sea level they lie, with the deepest points far below sea level; these are not typically described using the word "lowest" in isolation.

In everyday language, "lowest" is used to compare quantities or qualities: the lowest price, the lowest score, the lowest risk, or the lowest priority. It forms part of standard English grammar: low, lower, lowest.
