In the fiction, nivelliitos derive their name from the icy, rocky regions where their caves are most common, though the etymology is largely decorative.

They are typically 2 to 5 millimeters long, with a soft, segmented body and a fused carapace that provides protection in tight crevices. A pair of slender antennae and multiple legs are used to navigate narrow passages. Bioluminescent organs run along the ventral and lateral surfaces, emitting a blue-green glow that can intensify during courtship or threats.
