Nitratvulnerablen, also known as nitrate-vulnerable zones (NVZs), refer to designated areas within the European Union where the presence of nitrates in water bodies poses a significant risk to environmental health. These zones are identified under the Nitrates Directive (91/676/EEC), which aims to protect water quality by controlling agricultural nitrate pollution.

The directive was implemented to address the issue of excessive nitrate levels, primarily stemming from agricultural runoff containing fertilizers and animal manure. High nitrate concentrations in water can lead to eutrophication, where excessive nutrients trigger algal blooms that deplete oxygen levels, harming aquatic life. Additionally, nitrates in drinking water can pose health risks, particularly to infants, by potentially causing methemoglobinemia ("blue baby syndrome").

Member states of the EU are required to identify NVZs based on criteria such as nitrate concentrations in groundwater, surface water, and drinking water sources. Once designated, these areas must adhere to stricter agricultural management practices, including reduced fertilizer use, improved storage of livestock manure, and the adoption of precision farming techniques to minimize runoff.

The directive also mandates the creation of Nitrate Action Programs (NAPs) for each NVZ, outlining specific measures to reduce nitrate pollution. These programs are periodically reviewed and updated to ensure compliance and effectiveness. While the directive has been widely implemented across the EU, enforcement and results vary by country, depending on agricultural practices, regulatory strength, and economic factors.

Critics argue that the directive can impose significant economic burdens on farmers, particularly in regions heavily reliant on intensive agriculture. Supporters, however, emphasize its role in protecting water resources and public health, as well as promoting sustainable farming practices. The ongoing debate continues to shape policies aimed at balancing environmental protection with agricultural productivity.
