Nitraattimuodossa refers to a substance being in the form of nitrate. Nitrates are salts or esters of nitric acid. In chemistry, they are ionic compounds with the formula M(NO3)n, where M is a metal cation and n is its charge. The nitrate anion (NO3-) has a charge of -1.

Nitrates are commonly found in nature, particularly in soils, where they are a significant source of nitrogen for plants. Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant growth, and nitrates are a readily available form that plants can absorb through their roots. This is why nitrate compounds are frequently used as fertilizers in agriculture. Examples of common nitrate fertilizers include potassium nitrate (KNO3) and ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3).

In water systems, nitrates can originate from both natural sources, such as the decomposition of organic matter, and anthropogenic sources, like agricultural runoff containing fertilizers and wastewater. Elevated levels of nitrates in drinking water can pose health risks, particularly to infants, as they can lead to methemoglobinemia, also known as "blue baby syndrome." Regulatory bodies often set limits for nitrate concentrations in drinking water.

Beyond agriculture and environmental concerns, nitrates have various industrial applications. For example, nitrates are used in the production of explosives, such as nitroglycerin and TNT, due to the oxidizing properties of the nitrate group. They are also utilized in pyrotechnics, food preservation (e.g., curing meats), and in certain chemical processes.
