Niaros

Niaros is a fictional city commonly used in speculative fiction and tabletop role-playing games. In the standard setting, it sits on a sheltered bay along the northern coast of the continent of Eldara, facing the Narrow Sea. The harbor is backed by a limestone cliff that forms a natural amphitheater.

The city centers on a durable harbor district with warehouses and shipyards, while the old town climbs the hillside through narrow, arcaded streets. A newer quarter runs along the inland slope, and a low wall encircles the settlement, with a citadel perched above the harbor.

Niaros traces its origins to the 9th century when seafaring clans established a trading post. It grew as a link between inland caravans and maritime routes, endured periodic earthquakes, and was rebuilt after major shocks in successive centuries. Today it is governed by a council and a mayor.

Its economy combines fishing, shipbuilding, timber, and market services, with exports in resin and glass. The port supports regional trade and specialty crafts. Infrastructure includes a rail spur, river ferries, and a municipal electric and wastewater system.

Culturally, Niaros blends coastal and inland traditions. The dominant language is Niaric, with bilingual districts in some quarters. Festivals include Harbor’s Eve and the Founders’ Market. Notable sites include the Granite Gate and the University of Niaros.
