Newburn

Newburn is a village and civil parish in the City of Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, England. It lies on the south bank of the River Tyne, about seven miles west of Newcastle city centre. The parish is part of the metropolitan borough of Newcastle upon Tyne and is governed by Newburn Parish Council within the wider authority framework of Newcastle City Council. Historically, Newburn is best known for the Battle of Newburn Ford in 1640, an early conflict of the Bishops’ Wars. Covenanter forces defeated Royalists and rapidly moved on to capture Newcastle, a turning point that influenced subsequent events in the Civil War.
