Neutronbasert refers to technologies, processes, or phenomena that utilize neutrons as a fundamental component or principle of operation. Neutrons are subatomic particles with no electrical charge and a mass slightly greater than that of a proton. Their unique properties, such as their penetrating power and their ability to interact with atomic nuclei in specific ways, make them valuable in various scientific and industrial applications.

One significant application of neutron-based technology is in neutron scattering. By bombarding a material with neutrons and analyzing how they scatter, scientists can gain detailed information about the material's structure, dynamics, and magnetic properties. This technique is crucial in fields like condensed matter physics, materials science, and chemistry for understanding the arrangement of atoms and molecules.

Another area is neutron activation analysis (NAA). In NAA, a sample is exposed to neutrons, causing some of its atoms to become radioactive isotopes. Because neutrons interact differently with matter than X-rays, they can penetrate dense materials and reveal details that might be obscured by other methods. This is particularly useful for examining components made of heavy elements or for inspecting materials that are sensitive to X-rays.

In nuclear energy, neutrons are central to the process of nuclear fission, where the splitting of atomic nuclei releases energy and more neutrons, sustaining a chain reaction. The controlled moderation and absorption of neutrons are key to operating nuclear reactors safely and efficiently.
