Neutralposition is a term used across disciplines to denote a default, balanced, or unstressed configuration of a system, organism, or device. It refers to a central or resting state that minimizes bias or strain and provides a reference point for measurements, alignment, and adjustments.

In anatomy and biomechanics, the neutral position, or anatomical neutral, is the standard reference posture of the human body. This typically means standing upright with the arms at the sides, palms facing forward, and feet positioned to support balanced weight. Joints are in baseline angles with minimal strain, and movement is measured from this reference to describe flexion, extension, or rotation.

In ergonomics, the neutral position describes postures of the neck, back, wrists, and shoulders that reduce risk of strain and repetitive stress injuries. Guidelines emphasize maintaining neutral wrists during typing, a neutral spine during sitting or standing work, and taking regular breaks to minimize cumulative load.

In robotics and mechanical design, a neutral position is the pose to which a system returns when no actuators are active or when external forces are absent. It serves as a zero-reference for sensors and controllers and as a safe resting state during power-down or fault conditions.
