Neulonnan

Neulonnan is the Finnish term for the craft of knitting. In Finnish, neulonta refers to the activity of creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn with needles or, in some cases, machine knitters. Neulonnan encompasses hand knitting as well as machine knitting and related processes such as plying, finishing, and shaping.

Knitting likely originated in late medieval Europe and spread to other regions through trade and migration. The earliest surviving knitted items date from the medieval or early modern period, and the practice developed into a widespread craft in many cultures. In modern times, neulonnan remains a popular hobby worldwide, supported by clubs, magazines, online communities, and maker culture. It is associated with sustainable crafts, personal expression, and relaxation, while also serving as a link to historical textile traditions in Finland and beyond.
