Nesokia

Nesokia is a genus of rodents in the subfamily Murinae, belonging to the family Muridae. These are commonly known as short-tailed rats or mole rats. The genus currently contains two recognized species: Nesokia indica and Nesokia bunnii.

Nesokia indica, the Asian short-tailed rat or Indian mole rat, is found across a wide range of habitats in Southwest Asia and Central Asia, including Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, India, and Turkmenistan. It is a burrowing rodent, often found in agricultural fields, grasslands, and riverbanks. Its diet consists primarily of plant matter, including roots, tubers, and seeds.

Nesokia bunnii, the bunnii mole rat, is endemic to Iraq. It inhabits agricultural areas and is known for its extensive burrow systems. Like Nesokia indica, it is a herbivore.

Morphologically, Nesokia species are characterized by their robust bodies, short tails, and strong claws adapted for digging. Their fur is typically dense and brown or grayish-brown. They are generally solitary animals, with their activity patterns often dictated by nocturnal or crepuscular periods.

These rodents can sometimes be considered agricultural pests due to their burrowing activities, which can damage crops and irrigation systems. However, their ecological role in soil aeration and nutrient cycling is also recognized. Further research into their behavior, genetics, and conservation status continues.
