Neminathas

Neminathas, also known as Nemi or Arishtanemi, is the twenty-second Tirthankara in Jainism. The Tirthankaras are spiritual conquerors or perfected human beings who have attained liberation (moksha) and are revered as exemplars and teachers. Neminathas is believed to have lived a long time before the current era.

According to Jain tradition, Neminathas was born a prince in the Yadu dynasty in Saurashtra, Gujarat. His name, Arishtanemi, is derived from "arishta" meaning auspicious or inevitable, and "nemi" meaning discus or circle, suggesting a divinely ordained destiny. His birth is often associated with auspicious signs and events.

The life of Neminathas is characterized by his renunciation of worldly life. A significant event in his narrative is his decision to become an ascetic, often depicted as happening on the eve of his wedding. Legend has it that upon hearing the cries of animals destined to be sacrificed for his wedding feast, he was moved by compassion and renounced his royal life, along with his bride-to-be.

He is said to have attained omniscience (kevala jnana) under a Vasuki tree. His teachings, like those of other Tirthankaras, emphasize the principles of ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truthfulness), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacharya (celibacy), and aparigraha (non-possession). Neminathas is particularly associated with a strong emphasis on compassion and the protection of all living beings. His followers believe that by adhering to his teachings, one can achieve spiritual liberation.
