A typical tape backup system consists of a tape drive, which is a hardware device that reads and writes data to tape cartridges, and the tape cartridges themselves. Data is written sequentially onto the tape, meaning that to access a specific piece of data, the drive must read through the tape from the beginning until it reaches the desired location. This sequential access makes tape backups slower for random data retrieval compared to disk-based systems. However, for large-scale backups and long-term archiving, the benefits often outweigh this limitation.
