Naturlatex

Naturlatex, or natural latex, is the milky sap collected from rubber trees, primarily Hevea brasiliensis. It forms the basis of many rubber products, from gloves and medical devices to bedding foams. The term is used in several languages to distinguish natural latex from synthetic rubber materials, and it can refer to cured or processed forms used in consumer goods.

Composition and processing: Natural latex is a colloidal suspension of cis-1,4-polyisoprene in water, containing small amounts of proteins, sugars, and minerals. After collection, latex is coagulated, dried into sheets, or refined into foams through vulcanization and foaming methods. Latex foams are produced by Dunlop or Talalay processes and are used in mattresses and pillows for resilience, support, and comfort. Properties depend on particle size, filler additives, and processing.

Health and safety: Some individuals have latex allergies caused by proteins present in natural latex. Products can be deproteinized or blended with synthetic latex to reduce allergenicity. In medical settings, alternatives such as nitrile or vinyl are commonly used for gloves and other devices.

Sustainability and markets: The supply relies on rubber tree plantations; responsible forestry practices, fair labor conditions, and environmental management influence the sustainability of naturlatex products. Certifications and traceability exist in some regions, though standards vary. Market trends include blends of natural and synthetic latex to balance performance, cost, and allergen considerations.
