Naturaalueet

Naturaalueet, meaning nature areas, is a term used in Finland to refer to a network of protected areas established under the European Union's Natura 2000 program. These areas are designated to conserve specific natural habitats and species of European importance. The Finnish Ministry of the Environment is responsible for identifying and proposing these areas, which are then approved by the European Commission.

The primary goal of Naturaalueet is to ensure the long-term survival of a wide range of European flora and fauna. The network includes both terrestrial and marine sites, encompassing diverse ecosystems such as forests, mires, rocky shores, and open seas. These areas are selected based on strict scientific criteria, focusing on habitats and species listed in the EU's Habitats Directive and Birds Directive.

Management of Naturaalueet aims to maintain or restore the favorable conservation status of the protected habitats and species. This may involve various conservation measures, depending on the specific site and its ecological needs. While land ownership can vary, with areas belonging to the state, municipalities, private owners, or foundations, the conservation objectives are legally binding.

The Natura 2000 network in Finland is extensive, covering a significant portion of the country's land and sea area. It plays a crucial role in biodiversity conservation, providing a framework for protecting valuable natural heritage and ensuring ecological connectivity across Europe. Public access and recreation are generally allowed in Naturaalueet, provided they do not compromise conservation goals.
