Nattseendet

Nattseendet is a Swedish term that translates to "night vision" or "nocturnal vision." It refers to the ability of an organism to see in low-light conditions. This ability is crucial for many animals that are active at dawn, dusk, or throughout the night, allowing them to navigate, hunt, and avoid predators in the absence of bright sunlight.

The physiological mechanisms behind nattseendet vary among species but often involve specialized adaptations in the eye. These can include a higher proportion of rod cells in the retina, which are more sensitive to light than cone cells. Many nocturnal animals also possess a tapetum lucidum, a reflective layer behind the retina that bounces light back through the photoreceptor cells, effectively giving them a second chance to absorb photons. This layer is responsible for the distinctive "eyeshine" observed when light shines into the eyes of certain animals in the dark.

Furthermore, some animals have pupils that can dilate to a much larger extent than those of diurnal creatures, allowing them to capture as much available light as possible.
