Nattesynet

Nattesynet, also known as scotopic vision, refers to the ability of the human eye to see in low-light conditions. This type of vision is primarily mediated by specialized photoreceptor cells in the retina called rods. Unlike cones, which are responsible for color vision and function best in bright light (photopic vision), rods are highly sensitive to light and can detect even very faint levels of illumination.

During twilight or nighttime, when light levels are low, the cones become less active, and the rods take over. This transition results in a shift in our visual perception. While nattesynet allows us to navigate and detect movement in darkness, it comes at the cost of color perception and fine detail. Objects viewed in low light appear in shades of gray, and the resolution of our vision decreases significantly.

Several factors can influence an individual's nattesynet. Age plays a role, with nattesynet generally declining as people get older. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly a lack of vitamin A, can severely impair rod function and lead to night blindness. Certain medical conditions, such as retinitis pigmentosa, also affect rod cells and can cause significant vision loss, especially in dim light. Adapting to darkness, a process known as dark adaptation, is crucial for optimal nattesynet and can take anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes for full effect.
