Narrenzunft

Narrenzunft is a German term that translates to "fool's guild" or "jesters' guild." It refers to a traditional association or society of carnival characters, particularly prevalent in the Alemannic Fastnacht (carnival) celebrations in southwestern Germany, Switzerland, and Alsace. These guilds are central to the organization and execution of carnival parades and events.

Members of a Narrenzunft typically portray specific, often elaborate, carnival figures known as "Narren" (fools or jesters). Each figure has its own unique costume, mask (Larve), and often a specific role or significance within the guild and the carnival traditions. The designs of these masks and costumes are usually deeply rooted in local folklore, historical events, or symbolic representations of the region.

The Narrenzunft serves as a governing body for its members, setting rules for behavior during carnival, organizing parades, and preserving the traditions associated with their particular Narren figures. Membership is often hereditary or requires a period of apprenticeship, emphasizing the importance of continuity and the passing down of cultural heritage.
