Nandrolone

Nandrolone is a synthetic anabolic–androgenic steroid (AAS) derived from testosterone by removal of the C-19 methyl group, making it a 19-nor compound. It has strong anabolic effects with relatively modest androgenic activity and is less hepatotoxic than some other oral AAS when used in esterified injectable forms.

Medical uses: It is prescribed as an anabolic agent for conditions associated with muscle wasting and weight loss, including certain anemias, cachexia, and osteoporosis in some patients. Clinically available forms include nandrolone decanoate (long-acting) and nandrolone phenylpropionate (short-acting) for intramuscular injection.

Pharmacology: Nandrolone exerts effects mainly through the androgen receptor, promoting protein synthesis and nitrogen retention. It also has progestogenic activity and can suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, reducing endogenous testosterone production.

Administration and safety: It is given by intramuscular injection as esterified forms releasing over days to weeks. Adverse effects include virilization in women, menstrual disturbances, acne, edema, and lipid changes; prolonged gonadal suppression is possible. Nandrolone is a regulated substance and is banned in most sports; use is limited to approved medical indications and supervised by clinicians. It should not be used in pregnancy.
