Nahtarten

Nahtarten is the term used for the various methods of joining materials by stitching. The concept is applied in different disciplines, most notably in sewing and textile work as well as in medical surgery, where it refers to different suturing techniques. While the underlying idea is the same—joining edges or tissues with stitches—the specific methods, materials, and purposes differ according to context.

In sewing and textile work, nahtarten describe seams and stitch techniques used to connect fabric pieces and finish edges. Common examples include plain seams and French seams, which differ in how the fabric edges are enclosed; flat-felled seams for durability; and overlock or serged seams that finish raw edges to prevent fraying. Other stitch types focus on assembly or reinforcement, such as running stitches, backstitches for strength, and various hem stitches for edge finishing. The choice of seam or stitch depends on fabric type, desired appearance, durability, and load conditions.

In surgery, nahtarten refer to sutures and stitch patterns used to approximate wounds or anatomical structures. Suture materials are categorized by absorbability (absorbable vs nonabsorbable) and by filament form (monofilament vs multifilament). Common sutures include absorbable options like polyglycolic acid and poliglecaprone, and nonabsorbable options such as nylon, polypropylene, and silk. Typical techniques include interrupted sutures, continuous running sutures, vertical and horizontal mattress sutures, subcuticular (intradermal) sutures, and purse-string sutures. The selection depends on tissue type, tension, healing requirements, and infection risk.
