New York City, often abbreviated as NYC, is the most populous city in the United States. It is located at the southeastern tip of New York State, on one of the world’s largest natural harbors. NYC is composed of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island. The city functions as a global hub for finance, commerce, culture, media, and technology, with a highly diverse population.

Founded by Dutch settlers in 1624 as New Amsterdam, it was renamed New York in 1664 after English control was established. Kennedy International and LaGuardia in Queens and nearby Newark Liberty International in New Jersey. The city is governed by a mayor and city council within a five-borough structure and is home to several higher education institutions, including Columbia University, New York University, and the City University of New York.
