NOxsänkande

NOxsänkande is a Swedish term that translates to "NOx reducing" or "NOx lowering." It refers to processes, technologies, or substances designed to decrease the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Nitrogen oxides are a group of gases, primarily nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which are significant air pollutants. They are formed during the combustion of fossil fuels at high temperatures, commonly found in vehicle engines, power plants, and industrial boilers.

NOx emissions contribute to several environmental problems. They are precursors to acid rain, which can damage forests, lakes, and buildings. NOx also plays a role in the formation of ground-level ozone, a component of smog that can harm respiratory health and damage vegetation. Furthermore, NOx contributes to eutrophication of water bodies.

NOxsänkande measures aim to mitigate these negative impacts. In the automotive industry, this often involves the use of catalytic converters, which convert NOx into harmless nitrogen gas and oxygen. For stationary sources like power plants, technologies such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) are employed. These systems inject reducing agents, like ammonia or urea, into the exhaust stream to chemically transform NOx. Fuel modification and combustion process optimization are also strategies included under the umbrella of NOxsänkande efforts. The goal is to comply with environmental regulations and improve air quality.
