NMMC

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is the local governing body responsible for municipal administration in Navi Mumbai, a planned urban area on the Konkan coast in Maharashtra, India. It covers a substantial portion of Navi Mumbai and functions as one of several municipal corporations in the Mumbai metropolitan region, operating under the authority of the Maharashtra state government.

NMMC was constituted as a municipal corporation in 1991, succeeding the Navi Mumbai Municipal Council. It is headed by a Municipal Commissioner, who acts as the executive head, and is presided over by a Mayor and a Deputy Mayor elected from among the councilors. The corporation is divided into wards represented by councilors elected for five-year terms. Functions are carried out through departments such as engineering, health, education, revenue, and general administration.

NMMC is responsible for urban planning approvals, maintenance of roads and public spaces, water supply and sewage management, solid waste collection and disposal, public health and hospitals, street lighting, parks and libraries, and citizen services including permits and registrations. It also enforces local zoning regulations and building codes within its jurisdiction.

The NMMC funds its activities through property taxes, user fees, grants from state and central governments, and development charges. It has pursued digital and citizen-service initiatives to streamline service delivery, transparency, and grievance redressal. The corporation collaborates with CIDCO, the planning authority that developed Navi Mumbai, for infrastructure coordination and planning integration.
