The NIS2 directive, officially the Directive on measures for a high common level of cybersecurity across the Union, is a significant piece of European Union legislation aimed at strengthening cybersecurity across member states. It updates and expands upon the original NIS directive (Network and Information Security) from 2016. The NIS2 directive aims to address the evolving threat landscape and ensure a more consistent and robust cybersecurity posture across the EU.

Key objectives of NIS2 include broadening the scope of entities covered by the directive, introducing stricter security requirements, and enhancing incident reporting obligations. It categorizes entities into "essential" and "important" sectors, with essential entities facing more rigorous compliance measures. Sectors covered include critical infrastructure, digital infrastructure, public administration, and various industrial and technological sectors.

Under NIS2, organizations are required to implement appropriate technical, operational, and organizational measures to manage cybersecurity risks and prevent or minimize the impact of incidents. This includes measures related to risk management, supply chain security, access control, encryption, and incident handling. Furthermore, the directive mandates timely and comprehensive reporting of significant cybersecurity incidents to competent authorities.

NIS2 also introduces a framework for supervisory authorities and enforcement mechanisms. Member states are required to designate competent authorities responsible for overseeing the implementation of the directive and have the power to impose sanctions on non-compliant entities. The directive seeks to foster greater cooperation and information sharing among member states and with the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA).
