This allows for secure transactions between a payment device, such as a smartphone or a dedicated contactless card, and a point-of-sale terminal. For a transaction to occur, the payment device must be brought within a very close proximity of the terminal, typically a few centimeters, hence the term "nærfletigreiðslur" which translates to "near-field payments" in Icelandic.
