NEETPG

NEET-PG, or National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate, is the national-level entrance examination in India for admission to postgraduate medical and dental programs, specifically MD, MS, and MDS. The exam is conducted annually by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) on behalf of the National Medical Commission (NMC), the regulatory body that superseded the Medical Council of India. NEET-PG serves as the primary qualification criterion for most government and private medical colleges across the country.

Eligibility generally requires a degree of MBBS (for medicine) or BDS (for dentistry) from a recognized institution, completion of the compulsory rotating internship or demonstrable eligibility to complete it by a specified date, and registration with the appropriate medical or dental council. The exact eligibility criteria are defined by the administering authorities and relevant regulations.

The examination is typically computer-based and consists of multiple-choice questions designed to assess knowledge across the MBBS/BDS curriculum, including pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical subjects. The specific syllabus and the number of questions are set by the NBE and aligned with standard medical training.

Admission to postgraduate programs through NEET-PG is carried out via centralized counseling. In practice, seats are allocated through the Medical Counseling Committee for All India Quota and through state counseling for state quota seats. Additional seats may be offered by deemed universities and private colleges, subject to applicable policies and reservations.

NEET-PG is distinct from subsequent super-specialty examinations and other entrance tests. It plays a central role in shaping postgraduate medical education and related career trajectories in India.
