Näytelmäteoria, or play theory, is a field of study that examines the nature, function, and evolution of play. It seeks to understand why humans and animals play, what forms play takes, and what purposes it serves. Various theories have emerged to explain these aspects, offering different perspectives on the phenomenon.

One prominent theory is that play serves as a form of practice or preparation for adult life. This view suggests that by engaging in playful activities, young animals and humans can develop essential skills, such as hunting, fighting, social interaction, and problem-solving, in a safe and low-risk environment. Another perspective, the surplus energy theory, posits that play is a way to expend excess energy that is not needed for survival. This theory, however, has been criticized for not fully explaining why play often involves more than just random activity and why it continues even when energy levels are not excessively high.

The recapitulation theory, though largely outdated, suggested that play allows individuals to recapitulate or re-enact evolutionary stages of their species. More modern theories focus on the cognitive and social benefits of play. The cognitive development theory, often associated with Jean Piaget, views play as crucial for intellectual growth, aiding in the development of imagination, creativity, and understanding of the world. Social play theories emphasize how play helps individuals learn social rules, cooperation, conflict resolution, and empathy.

Furthermore, some theories highlight the role of play in emotional regulation and stress relief. Play can be a way to process emotions, reduce anxiety, and build resilience. Evolutionary psychologists also explore the adaptive value of play, suggesting that it contributes to fitness by enhancing cognitive abilities, social bonds, and physical prowess, all of which can improve an individual's chances of survival and reproduction.
