Mässingslegeringar, commonly known as brass, are alloys primarily composed of copper and zinc. The proportion of zinc can vary widely, influencing the brass's properties. Generally, as the zinc content increases, the alloy becomes stronger and more durable but less ductile. Brass is well-known for its attractive golden color, corrosion resistance, and ease of workability.

Different types of brass exist, categorized by their zinc content and sometimes by the addition of other elements. Cartridge brass, with approximately 30% zinc, is highly ductile and used for ammunition casings. Naval brass, containing about 60% copper, 39% zinc, and 1% tin, offers enhanced resistance to saltwater corrosion, making it suitable for marine applications. Red brass, with a higher copper content (around 85%), exhibits excellent corrosion resistance and is often used for plumbing fittings and decorative items. Free-machining brass, which includes a small amount of lead, is easier to cut and shape, making it ideal for producing intricate parts.

Brass is utilized in a vast array of applications due to its versatility. It is commonly found in musical instruments like trumpets and trombones, plumbing fixtures, hardware, decorative items, electrical connectors, and ammunition. Its non-sparking properties also make it valuable in environments where flammable materials are present. The recyclability of brass further contributes to its widespread use.
