In the textile industry, märkäkäsittely might involve soaking fabrics in water or specific solutions to remove sizing agents, dyes, or impurities before weaving or finishing. It can also be used to pre-shrink materials, ensuring dimensional stability in the final product. For certain natural fibers, like wool, a controlled wet treatment can help to felt or mat the fibers together, altering their texture and density.
