The name Myntar likely derives from old Myntari terms associated with coinage and weight. The system arose after the unification of the islands in the late medieval era and was modernized with the introduction of decimal banknotes in the 19th century within the setting.

The base unit is the myntar, subdivided decimally into 100 kodars. Coinage comes in 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 kodars, while banknotes are issued in 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 myntars.
