Muttertag

Muttertag, or Mother's Day in German, is a celebration honoring mothers and mother figures, recognizing their contributions and sacrifices. It is an occasion for families to express love and gratitude.

The tradition of Muttertag in Germany was inspired by the American Mother's Day. It was first celebrated in Germany in 1923, promoted by the German flower industry. The holiday was later co-opted by the Nazi regime for propaganda purposes, but after World War II, it reverted to its original purpose of honoring mothers.

In Germany, Muttertag is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, aligning with the date in several other countries.

On this day, children often give their mothers flowers, typically carnations or roses, and other gifts. Families come together for special meals, and mothers are often treated to a day of relaxation and appreciation. It is common for children to prepare breakfast in bed for their mothers and spend quality time with them. Many also send greeting cards or write letters expressing their gratitude.
