Mutkan

Mutkan is a fictional ethnolinguistic term used in speculative fiction and world-building to describe a mountain-dwelling people and their language. In most depictions, Mutkan communities inhabit a highland plateau between two river basins on the northern fringe of the continent of Valara, with a cool, temperate climate and terraced agriculture. The Mutkan are portrayed as organized into kin-based clans, with a council of elders guiding major decisions and rituals. Economic life centers on agriculture, pastoralism, and metalworking, with distinctive pottery and textiles that reflect geometric motifs passed down through generations. Religion typically centers on ancestors and natural forces, particularly mountains and rivers, integrated into seasonal ceremonies.

Mutkan language: a synthetic agglutinative language with SOV (subject–object–verb) order. It features a rich system of case suffixes, a small vowel inventory, and a set of glottalized consonants. The writing system is often depicted as a syllabary or abjad mixed with logograms, depending on the author. Lexicon emphasizes kinship terms, landscape features, and craft vocabulary.
