Mutaatiokertymä is a Finnish term that translates to "mutation accumulation" in English. It refers to the process by which genetic mutations gradually accumulate in the genome of an organism over time. This accumulation can occur due to various factors, including errors during DNA replication, exposure to mutagens, and incomplete or faulty DNA repair mechanisms.

Mutation accumulation is a fundamental concept in evolutionary biology and genetics. It underlies the phenomenon of genetic drift, where the frequency of certain alleles in a population can change randomly due to chance events, especially in small populations. Over many generations, the accumulation of neutral mutations can lead to genetic divergence between populations and, ultimately, to the formation of new species.

While often associated with neutral mutations that do not confer a survival advantage or disadvantage, mutation accumulation can also include the buildup of deleterious mutations. In asexual organisms, these deleterious mutations can increase over time, a process known as Muller's ratchet, which can potentially lead to extinction if not counteracted by mechanisms like recombination.
