Musulmana

Musulmana is the feminine form of the Spanish noun and adjective muslmán, used to refer to a woman who follows Islam, i.e., a Muslim woman. The masculine form is muslmán and the feminine plural is musulmanas, while the masculine plural is musulmanes. As an adjective it can describe people, communities, or practices associated with Islam.

The term derives from the Arabic Muslim, meaning “one who submits [to God].” In Arabic the feminine is Muslimā (مسلمة, Muslima). In Spanish, the form was adapted as musulmán (masculine) and musulmana (feminine). The word is widely used in Spanish-language discourse on Islam and Muslim individuals.

Practices and expression among musulmanas are diverse and reflect personal choice as well as cultural contexts. Core Islamic practices for Muslims include the Five Pillars, such as the profession of faith, daily prayers, fasting during Ramadan, almsgiving, and pilgrimage to Mecca. How a Muslim woman expresses her faith, including dress, fasting, and prayer, varies and is influenced by tradition, country, and personal interpretation. Some wear the hijab or other coverings, while others do not wear head coverings.
